The International Festival of Classical Music "Villanueva de los Infantes" is pleased to announce the first edition of the Composition Prize, "Don Quixote de la Mancha - 2009".

Objective: The Prize, "Don Quixote de la Mancha" shall be awarded to the best musical composition submitted to the contest which will receive its world premiere at the Music Festival in 2009.

The prize to be awarded to the winning submission shall be 1,000 euros and shall include a minimum of one performance at the Festival during the 2009 season. Further performances shall be at the discretion of the Festival.

The decision and award of the jury shall be final.

Compositions submitted must conform to the following:

Length: Not to exceed 15 minutes.

Theme: The composition should depict a scene or scenes and/or (a) character(s) from Cervantes' novel. "Don Quixote" and should include a musical description of the Spanish Town, Villanueva de los Infantes, which has been designated as "El Lugar de La Mancha" (according to the novel, the town from which Don Quijote sallied forth on his adventures).

Premiere performance: Compositions submitted shall not have received their performance premiere prior to being submitted for consideration.

Scoring: The composition should be scored for no more than 2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, one contrasting wind instrument and/or percussion. Any use of synthesizer(s) should be realizable in live performance and would need to be performed by the composer in the premiere. A solo (virtuoso) violin part will be considered a positive element in judging the composition.

Performance Rights: All performance rights to the composition shall remain the property of the composer, except that the Festival management shall retain the right to perform and/or record the composition in perpetuity without further compensation to the owner of the performance rights. The premiere performance shall be reserved for the 2009 season of the Festival and shall be performed by artists of the festival.

The closing date for submissions shall be April 30, 2009 and submissions must reach the festival offices on or before that date at:

Submissions shall consist of one paper copy in full-score format, together with a biography of the composer, as well as a copy of the score in PDF format. Performance parts shall be provided by the composer within two weeks of notification of winning the prize. The winning composer will be provided by the Festival with lodging in Villanueva de los Infantes for the premiere performance during the festival.

The winner of the composition prize will be announced on or before July 1, 2009 on this website.
